European Critical Heritage : The Reception of British and Irish Authors in Europe

The Research Project documents fully the Continental reception of major British and Irish writers including Virginia Woolf, Lawrence Sterne, Jonathan Swift, Lord Byron, Jane Austen, Walter Scott, Henry James, James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, each of whom made powerful and innovatory contributions to a genre and style that came to dominate modern literature. Their impact on major writers across the Channel such as Balzac, Flaubert, and Tolstoy, gave rise to a body of writing that characterizes and disseminates to a widening reading public a shared literary culture and continues to our own time in a variety of media.
The output is in two major forms:
1) a series of substantial published volumes based on individual authors’ reception (Continuum, London and New York);
2) an extensive and updatable bibliographical database relating to all the volumes published in the Series.
The audience are academics and advanced students in the first instance, but the materials are of interest and use to a wider audience of writers, critics, journalists, teachers, researchers, publishers and others, in the countries of Europe and overseas.
The volumes are available in good research libraries, and the database is accessible online. Scholars are welcome to register to use it via the portal on the Project home page.
There is no equivalent source for information on the reception of British and Irish authors in the countries of Europe.
