Tibetan visual history 1920-1950: an online resource

Posted by arts-humanities.net on March 29, 2015

The Pitt Rivers Museum and the British Museum together hold extraordinarily rich, and overlapping, collections of over 6,000 historical photographs of Tibet taken between 1920 and 1950. Conceived by their photographers as a unified visual resource, the photographs chart a crucial period in Tibetan history and in Anglo-Tibetan relations. More importantly the photographs constitute a vital record of Tibetan culture destroyed since the Chinese occupation.

The Historical Thesaurus of English (HTE)

Posted by arts-humanities.net on March 29, 2015

The Historical Thesaurus of English is the first historical thesaurus to be compiled for any of the world's languages. It includes almost the entire recorded vocabulary of English from Old English to the modern period, taken from the Oxford English Dictionary and dictionaries of Old English. The distinctive, semantically-structured hierarchy of the HTE data allows scholars access to material in a uniquely flexible manner, making it an invaluable resource to historians and linguists in particular.

Montréal l'avenir du passé (MAP)

Posted by Robert Sweeny on March 29, 2015

Montréal l'avenir du passé (MAP) was established in 2000 to create an historical GIS research infrastructure for 19th and 20th century Montréal. We have digitized six highly detailed historical maps representing all buildings in the city for 1825, 1846, 1880, 1912, 1949 and 2000. The first three and last have been geo-referenced and we have successfully "peopled" them by linking at the street-scape (1846) or lot level (1880 & 2000) census returns, tax records, city directories and a wide variety of non-routinely generated sources.
