Fully descriptive analytic catalogue of the Waddell Manuscripts NGB (including miniatur paintings & other artwork)

"The Rig 'dzin Tshe dbang nor bu edition of the rNying ma'i rgyud 'bum is a beautifully illustrated set of manuscripts, originally in thirty-three volumes, thirty volumes of which survive. It represents an important collection of Tibetan Buddhist tantric scriptures, once with many witnesses, but now with only a handful of extant editions. Of all the surviving editions, the Rig 'dzin Tshe dbang nor bu edition is the most lavishly produced, manufactured from good materials, finely decorated, and illustrated with many high quality hand-painted miniatures. The collection was procured in Tibet during the Younghusband expedition in 1904 by L.A. Waddell, who identified it as the most splendid and significant of all the great number of literary artifacts he procured during that expedition. Twenty-nine of the volumes are now located at the British Library, London, while one volume is to be found at Oxford University's Bodleian Library, and two illuminated title folios at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.1 We have very little information about the collection's history, and there does not even appear to be a clear record of its fate on leaving Tibet, so we are not certain whether it was complete in 1904 and thus whether any of the presently missing volumes might come to light elsewhere" (from project web site; please see for more details).

"Our collection was originally in thirty-three large volumes, Volume Ka to A, O?, ??, and H??. Of these thirty-three volumes, thirty are available; we are missing Volumes Ta, O?, and apart from its illustrated title folio, Volume Ga, and we are also missing the title folios to Volumes Ca and Sha. The thirty available volumes are otherwise more or less complete, although there are occasional missing pages, or sheets which have not been well preserved, and the final volume H?? has suffered considerable water damage. Some volumes are wrapped in coloured cloth, usually of poor quality, fraying and stained material. Each volume consists of a varying number of folios, between 256 and 343 numbered folios, the first folio beginning immediately with the first text and the last folio ending after the final text of the volume, without any added introductory or concluding comment. The size of the folios varies slightly: in most volumes, the plain sheets are 577 x 125 mm, but these measurements vary from volume to volume, and even within a volume there may be some small amount of size variation. There may also be some variation in the thickness of the folios, most but not all consisting of more than one layer of paper. Sometimes there is some consistency within a volume in this respect (eg. Vol. Ca where nearly all the sheets are thick), but on other occasions, there may be some sheets so thin that the ink on one side of the folio is visible on the other, while other sheets are thick (eg. Vol. Kha). Furthermore, we frequently find that some sheets are not cut very straight, the writing is not always exactly square on the page, and occasionally, the top and bottom of a folio may be cut in rather wavy lines".
