A Descriptive Catalogue of the James M. Carpenter Collection of Traditional Song and Drama

The James Madison Carpenter Collection of Traditional Song and Drama is one of the most important and extensive collections of its kind. The bulk of it comprises British material which Carpenter (1888-1983), a Harvard graduate, gathered in the period 1928-35. The remainder comprises material gathered from various parts of the USA and probably dates from immediately after this period.

The St Alban's Psalter: on the Web

To digitise the St Albans Psalter and place it on the web. The images are accompanied by complete transcription, translation (Latin into both English and German). Each image has a page-by-page commentary, and the manuscript is amplified by about 40,000 words of accompanying essays.
Aims: to make the psalter available in colour.
Research questions: to understand how the manuscript was made, when, for whom, and why the range of images were chosen.

The origin and spread of stock-keeping in the Near East and Europe

In western Eurasia we know that the earliest evidence for domestic farmyard animals occurs around 10,000 years ago. We also know that farming then spread westwards through Europe over the subsequent millennia, arriving in the far west and north of Europe some 6,000 years ago. For decades there have been major debates as to the nature of this spread, with many basic questions still remaining largely unanswered. The objective of this major research project, which has been funded for four years by the AHRC, is to address these questions.

An anthropological investigation of bird sound

This project investigates the role of sound in the human perception of the non-human environment, focusing on human responses to the sounds of birds. Contrary to the view, commonly advanced in writings on human sensory perception, that vision and hearing are radically distinguished along the lines of a contrast between objective observation and subjective participation, we suggest that seeing is as much an experience of light as much as hearing is an experience of sound. Under what conditions, then, does sound enable us to hear things, as light enables us to see them?

1641 Depositions

The aim of this three-year project (2007-2010) is to transcribe and digitise the ‘1641 Depositions’, a unique historical source housed in the TCD Library, The collection comprises some 3,100 personal statements, in which mainly protestant men and women of all classes told of their experiences at the outbreak of the rebellion by the catholic Irish in 1641. This material, collected by government-appointed commissioners over the course of a decade, runs to approximately 19,000 pages.
