The Old Bailey Online, 1674-1834

The Old Bailey Proceedings form one of the largest bodies of published text ever created, detailing the lives and experiences of non-elite people. Containing 25 million words of text, they record the evidence given at and outcome of 100,000 trials held at the Old Bailey. This project has created a searchable text-base, that can be used for free text searching, structured searching of marked-up text, and statistical analysis. This resource has been made available online and free of charge to any one with an internet connection.

Plebeian Lives and the Making of Modern London, 1690-1800 aims to create a digital archive of manuscript and printed sources concerning the lives of ordinary people in eighteenth-century London, focusing on poor relief, criminal justice, and medical care. It also integrates existing electronic resources, making use of recent technical advances in the analysis of multiple digital sources. The result will be a freely-available web-based resource enabling the reconstruction of ‘ordinary’ lives in the round, rather than as documented in single contacts with administrative bodies.

The Central Criminal Court Online has digitised and posted in a searchable form 70 million words of transcripts of trials held at the Old Bailey between 1834 and 1913. It forms an extension to the NOF and AHRB funded project 'The Old Bailey Online', and forms a seamless body of text detailing all trials held between 1674 and 1834. In total approximately 125 million words of text is available. By tagging the rekeyed and OCRd text in XML for names, offences, trial outcomes, punsihments, etc., the site allows comprehensive statistical information to be generated.
The Nature of Phenomenal Qualities

This project will explore issues connected with the exact nature of the phenomenal aspects of experience: these are the colours, sounds, and so on, which are immediately present in conscious experience. A poll is presented on the website and an interactive area of the site will be developed as the project develops. There is currently broad-ranging debate about the reality and cognitive role of phenomenal qualities.

The aim was to make available in a fully searchable form, the full text of the Proceedings of the Old Bailey, 1674 to 1834, in combination with original page images. The Proceedings and the website contain 25 million words of transcripts of approximately 100,000 felony trials held at the Old Bailey between 1674 and 1834. This text has been transcribed and marked up to allow both free text searching, and structured analysis using bespoke statistical tools.
Connected Histories

Connected Histories (Sources for Building British History, 1500-1900) will create a federated search facility for a wide range of distributed electronic resources relating to early modern and nineteenth-century British History.
Through a combination of web crawling and the application of Natural Language Processing methodology the project will create a non-intrusive, distanced tagging of the data within those distributed sources to facilitate more sophisticated and structured searching.
